Community Outreach
|
Being one of
the oldest congregations in Olathe, we believe it is important to
continually give back to our community. First Christian Church has
several outreach programs that benefit our community. COMMUNITY PANCAKE BREAKFASTS These are scheduled throughout the year to raise awareness of the vital organizations in our community. Money has been raised for Central Elementary School, TLC (Temporary Lodging for Children and Families), and the Olathe Public Library. NEIGHBORHOOD PARTIES We started having Neighborhood Parties in 2006. There were 4 parties in 2006 beginning with Halloween, followed by a Winter Festival, Egg Decorating Party, and a Luau. The Halloween Party for 2007 was scheduled October 28th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. There was food, games, a haunted house, and candy. Costumes were in abundance and of great variety! THE STOCKWELL FOOD PANTRY The Stockwell Food Pantry is open from 10:00 – 12:00 Tuesday through Friday. The food pantry helps around 500 people per month. We accept donations of non-perishable food items and toiletries, or money to buy items for the food pantry. A Special Thank You to the Johnson County Employees for the check we received from the Feed the Need Program. OPERATION INASMUCH In 2006 we held the first OPERATION INASMUCH. It was such a huge success because of all who volunteered their time and talents. This is our annual event designed to reach even farther into our local community. This is a way we can make a difference in our community and our church as we work together to help others. We have teams of volunteers who help seniors with lawn care, painting, difficult chores in the home, making quilt lap robes for local nursing facility residents, free haircuts for children, mattress turning at the local high-rises, collecting personal items for TLC (Temporary Lodging for Children and Families), and a food drive for the Stockwell Food Pantry. “Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40) GROUPS AT FIRST CHRISTIAN Groups that use our building are the Olathe Historical Society, Boy Scouts, Mother to Mother, Olathe Civic Jazz Band, and the Girl Scouts. Each group has weekly, biweekly, or monthly meetings and rehearsals here. |
