The Spirit of the Church

The First Christian Church of Olathe is progressive in viewpoint and policy.  We are a freedom-loving body of people, seeking to be Christian in all that we say and do.  There is no attempt to dictate in Biblical interpretation or in theological thought.  In such matters members have the freedom and responsibility of private judgment.

Every member is encouraged to live by a disciple’s way of life.  We strive to encourage understanding and cooperation among ourselves and all Christian believers.  We seek to show a religious faith that is intelligent, rational, practical, and vital to life in the world.  People with varying beliefs and religious backgrounds find meaningful fellowship and opportunities for service to God in the First Christian Church of Olathe.

Our Affirmation of Faith

As members of the Christian Church,
We confess that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of the living God,
and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
In Christ's name and by his grace
we accept our mission of witness
             and service to all people.
We rejoice in God,
             maker of heaven and earth,
and in God’s covenant of love
which binds us to God and to one another.
Through baptism into Christ
we enter into newness of life
and are made one with the whole people of God.
In the communion of the Holy Spirit
we are joined together in discipleship
             and in obedience to Christ.
At the Table of the Lord
             we celebrate with thanksgiving
the saving acts and presence of Christ.
Within the universal church
we receive the gift of ministry
             and the light of scripture.
In the bonds of Christian faith
             we yield ourselves to God
that we may serve the One
             whose kingdom has no end.
Blessing, glory, and honor
             be to God forever.

Amen.

Chalice bearing the cross of St. AndrewThe symbol of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a red chalice bearing the cross of St. Andrew.

The chalice symbolizes the Lord’s Supper as the center of life and worship.  Red signifies Christ’s blood and our ministry of evangelism.  St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, recalls the Presbyterian roots of the Disciples.

             The Lord’s Supper

In keeping with the historical practice of early Christians, the Lord’s Supper is served every Sunday.  It is not presented as an obligation, but as a spiritual opportunity.  It is a matter of personal conscience and decision as to whether or not one wishes to partake.  The Lord’s Supper is open to all who believe in Christ and desire to remember Him in this manner.

Be a Part of the Family

We are a church united by a common faith.  Our life together is rich with worship, Bible studies, fellowship times, and outreach projects.  We carry a concern for each other and for the world.  We believe that First Christian is best experienced by being a part of the family, joining in with others in the many activities of the faith.

             Become a Member

There are two ways of becoming a member of the First Christian Church.  One is by public confession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior followed by Baptism.

If you have already been baptized, there is no requirement to be re-baptized.  You come by transfer of your membership from another congregation.

An invitation is extended at the close of every service of worship.  Those wishing to unite with the congregation may come forward and be accepted in Christian fellowship and commitment.
